Israel has begun its long-planned ground invasion of Gaza City, the military said, as a UN commission concluded that the country had committed genocide against Palestinians in the strip.
The invasion of the enclave’s biggest city — which followed a night of intense bombardment — marks the latest intensification of Israel’s 23-month offensive against Hamas, which has caused a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and tipped part of it into famine.
In a briefing on Tuesday, a military official said that ground forces from Israel’s southern command had “expanded ground activity” into Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians — many of whom have been displaced multiple times over the past two years — are still sheltering.
