Alexei Navalny’s allies have accused the Russian authorities of covering up his death and called it a state-sponsored murder as police arrested people attending spontaneous gatherings in his memory.
Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s spokeswoman, said officials had given the opposition activist’s mother contradictory information about his cause of death and the whereabouts of his body, in what she described as a stalling tactic.
Lyudmila Navalnaya received a telegram on Saturday saying her son had died at 2:17pm local time on Friday, according to Yarmysh.
