Philippines restores military pact with US

President Rodrigo Duterte reverses his decision that had caused friction with Washington

Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has restored a military agreement with Washington, overturning a decision that had caused friction between Washington and its oldest ally in Asia at a time of intensifying US-Chinese rivalry.

Duterte reversed his decision to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement that governs the presence of US troops in the Philippines after a meeting with Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, on Friday, according to Delfin Lorenzana, his Philippine counterpart.

“VFA is in full force again after Secretary Austin’s meeting with President Duterte,” Lorenzana wrote on Twitter. “No challenge is insurmountable between longstanding allies that are committed to attaining shared goals of regional peace and stability.”
