Amazon/MGM: need for compelling content justifies splashing the cash

Deal would bulk up ecommerce giant’s TV and film operations

Amazon’s boss is throwing down the gauntlet to rivals Netflix and Disney in the hotly contested video streaming war. The ecommerce group is in talks to acquire MGM, the film studio behind the James Bond franchise, for about $9bn. 

A deal would substantially bulk up Amazon’s film and TV operations. MGM’s expansive content library boasts 4,000 movies, including The Terminator and Rocky, and hit TV shows such as Fargo and The Handmaid’s Tale. It also owns the premium cable network Epix.
