New claims for unemployment benefits rose to 719,000 last week but remained near pandemic-era lows as coronavirus vaccinations and business reopenings supported the labour market’s gradual improvement.
The number of jobless claims filed for regular state programmes increased by 61,000 in the week ending March 27, the US labour department said on Thursday. That was worse than economists’ expectations for 680,000 new claims.
Last week, 658,000 initial claims were registered, the lowest level since the start of the coronavirus crisis last year. Filings peaked at 6.87m during the early days of the pandemic.
