Australia’s compliance culture breeds Covid-19 success

Efficient testing and contact tracing is at the forefront of its virus response

When I came down with a nasty head cold last week, my first concern was not Covid-19, but that I would miss coaching my son’s team for their first game of the cricket season.

Under Australia’s strict health guidelines, even people with mild symptoms are told to be tested and self-isolate. I had just 48 hours to get a negative test result and prove my fitness to fellow parents.

My nonchalant reaction to developing symptoms reflects the phenomenal success Australia has achieved in suppressing the virus. Apart from a recent outbreak in Melbourne — now under control — most states have eliminated community transmission or are reporting only a handful of cases a day.
