The head of TikTok’s India operations has said it will increase its users by 50 per cent in 2020, as it embarks on a journey towards monetisation and works to rebound from a turbulent year that saw it temporarily banned in the country.
Nikhil Gandhi said in an interview with the Financial Times that the short-form video app was focused on cultivating “value” content — an emphasis on quality that comes after TikTok recently became the centre of a series of religious and caste controversies.
TikTok has taken India by storm, amassing more than 200m users in the country of 1.3bn people, a number closing in on WhatsApp’s 400m. Mr Gandhi said the momentum showed no sign of slowing down, as the app works to onboard advertisers.
