Trump to meet China’s Liu on Thursday as deal hopes rise

Donald Trump is set to meet Chinese vice-premier Liu He at the White House on Thursday, as Beijing and Washington draw closer to a new deal on trade.

Mr Liu, Chinese president Xi Jinping's top economic adviser, is in Washington this week meeting with Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, and Steven Mnuchin, the US Treasury secretary.

The meetings come as expectations build that a trade deal may be close, ending a year of frictions that have forced many companies to shift production to supply chains outside of China. Optimists take hope because Mr Liu's trip comes close on the heels of US negotiators' visit to Beijing last week.
