The US plans to proceed with a request for the extradition from Canada of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s finance chief, on allegations related to the evasion of sanctions on Iran, according to a local media report.
Confirmation of the extradition plans — reported by The Globe and Mail — may ratchet up tensions between Beijing and Washington at a critical time in negotiations between the world’s two biggest economies over their trade dispute.
Ms Meng was arrested in Vancouver in December on allegations that Huawei sold US-made equipment to Iran. She has since been released on bail and said she intends to fight an extradition request from the US, but if that fails she would try to “clear her name”.
