Twelve former ambassadors to China have published an open letter urging the release of two Canadians detained in the country, amid calls for Chinese telecoms firm Huawei to be banned in Canada in an escalating diplomatic dispute between Ottawa and Beijing.
The letter to Xi Jinping, Chinese president,
seeks the release of Michael Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat who worked for the International Crisis Group, and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur who organised trips to North Korea by tourists, investors and athletes, including US basketball star Dennis Rodman.
