Trump says GM cuts will fuel plans to slap tariffs on cars

US President Donald Trump said looming job cuts and plant closures at General Motors, the largest American carmaker, had given fresh impetus to his plans to slap tariffs on car imports, escalating trade tensions with US allies ahead of the G20 summit. 

Mr Trump has reacted with frustration and anger at GM, after the company this week said planned cost cuts would include the shuttering of manufacturing facilities in politically pivotal rust belt states such as Ohio and Michigan. 

In a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Trump said GM would “not be closing their plants” if tariffs had been placed on “cars coming in”.
