Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday officially opened the world's longest sea bridge, connecting semi-autonomous Hong Kong and Macau to mainland China.
The 36km, $20bn bridge is part of a wider initiative by Mr Xi - called the Greater Bay Area - to integrate Hong Kong and Macau into China's neighbouring Guangdong province.
Beijing hopes that big infrastructure projects like the bridge, and a new $11bn high-speed rail link to Hong Kong, will stimulate a new burst of growth in a region that has long been China's most dynamic economic engine.
