The trial of Wu Xiaohui, ex-chairman of acquisitive conglomerate Anbang Insurance Group, began in Shanghai on Wednesday, in a proceeding that will reveal more detail about the government's accusations of economic crimes against Mr Wu.
The No 1 Shanghai Intermediate People's Court announced the opening of the trial on its official microblog account. The date of the trial had not been previously disclosed, so the sudden announcement that it had begun was a surprise.
Mr Wu (pictured) is being tried for "fraudulent fundraising" and "work-related embezzlement", according to the statement.
