Trump administration prepares fresh sanctions against North Korea

Donald Trump’s administration is close to imposing further sanctions on Pyongyang, just two days after the US president told world leaders at the UN that Kim Jong Un, the North Korean dictator, was on a “suicide mission”.

Speaking at the UN on Thursday, Mr Trump said he would put more sanctions on Pyongyang, which has already been hit by two recent rounds of UN sanctions. Asked if new measures would be unveiled today, he replied: “We will put more sanctions on North Korea.”

Steven Mnuchin, US Treasury secretary, is expected to unveil the latest sanctions at 3pm in New York on Thursday. One person familiar with the situation said the Trump administration would issue an executive order to expand the way in which the US government can target entities that conduct financial transactions, or engage in commerce, with North Korea.
