Steve Bannon removed from National Security Council role

President Donald Trump has removed Steve Bannon from the White House National Security Council, in a reversal that comes two months after he named his top aide to the position in a move that sparked criticism from foreign policy experts and Capitol Hill.

A White House official said Mr Trump had reorganised the National Security Council and that Mr Bannon would no longer participate in the NSC “principals committee” — the cabinet officials and the top military and intelligence officers who determine policy on national security.

Mr Trump appointed Mr Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News, to the committee in January. Critics said the move would result in the politicisation of national security policy, and raised concerns that the presidential order also appeared to downgrade the role of the chairman of the joint chiefs and the director of national intelligence.
