Qatar dismisses threat to hosting the World Cup

Qatar has dismissed speculation that it risks being stripped of the 2022 World Cup following Sepp Blatter’s resignation as Fifa president and welcomed a Swiss investigation into how it was awarded the football tournament.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani, president of the Qatar football association, said Qatar had already been “cleared of any wrongdoing” by Michael Garcia, a US investigator hired by Fifa to look into the bids.

Mr Garcia’s report has now been passed to the Swiss authorities, who are looking into possible corruption in the Russia and Qatar World Cup bid processes.
