Australia hit by China coal tariff move

Canberra has warned that China’s decision to reinstate tariffs on imported coal is unhelpful as Australia scrambles to secure a free-trade agreement with its biggest trading partner.

The tariffs, due to come into force next week, will also heap further pain on to Australia’s coal producers, which are already struggling after a collapse in prices.

Andrew Robb, Australia’s trade minister, described the tariffs as a “bump in the road” that would have to be ironed out in negotiations with Beijing.
