US toughens airport checks on devices

US authorities are ramping up security checks on electronic devices carried by passengers travelling to the US in response to fears of terrorism raised by the advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or Isis, in the Middle East.

On Sunday, the Transportation Security Administration said security officers might ask the owners of electronic equipment such as mobile phones to switch them on at the time of the screening, and “powerless devices” would not be allowed on board.

“TSA will continue to adjust security measures to ensure that travellers are guaranteed the highest levels of aviation security conducted as conveniently as possible,” it said.
