Tens of thousands of people gathered in Hong Kong last night for a candlelight vigil to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre 25 years ago.
In sweltering heat, people from across the former British colony poured into Victoria Park to take part in the only major public event in China in memory of the hundreds – and possibly thousands – of people killed when the Chinese military deployed tanks against pro-democracy demonstrators massed in the Beijing square on June 4 1989.
“It is a very important stage for China to fight for democracy,” said Kathy Yuen, a college student.
