Driverless cars to take the wheel

Google is taking the stabilisers off its driverless car project, producing its own fleet of 100 prototype vehicles that dispense with steering-wheels and pedals, writes Tim Bradshaw.

The two-seater electric cars will take it slow at first, limiting their top speed to 25mph, and building their bonnets with foam to minimise the impact in the event of a crash. Each car will have two motors, so that if one fails, the other can steer it to safety.

Google hopes to run pilots of its own self-driving cars on public roads in California in “the next couple of years”. Until now, it has retrofitted existing cars, mainly Lexus sports utility vehicles, with radars, cameras and other sensors.
