Hewlett-Packard will cut as many as 16,000 employees in addition to the 34,000 lay-offs previously indicated, or another 5 per cent of its workforce, as the technology group attempts to turn round its business.
The company has struggled to revamp itself in the post-PC era. Meg Whitman, chief executive, has attempted to push the business further into software services and expanding sectors such as big data, security services, and selling the servers used in cloud computing.
The company announced it would eliminate between 11,000 and 16,000 jobs, bringing the total number of positions cut during the restructuring to as many as 50,000.
