The Congress party conceded defeat in the Indian general election on Friday as early counting predicted a landslide victory for opposition leader Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party.
“We concede that the people of India have spoken and we will humbly accept the verdict and perform the role assigned to us as a responsible opposition,” Randeep Surjewala, a Congress spokesman, told local media.
Mr Modi turned to Twitter to claim victory declaring: “India has won. [And in Hindi] Good days are here again”.
