Mikhail Khodorkovsky said yesterday he would not fight for power in Russia following his release from jail but made clear he could remain an irritant to president Vladimir Putin as he vowed to campaign to free other political prisoners.
Speaking to the Financial Times and a small group of journalists in Berlin two days after his unexpected presidential pardon, Mr Khodorkovsky, 50, said he would not return to Russia for now as he faced a legal claim for $500m.
He said he would not fund opposition parties – as his Yukos oil company did a decade ago, angering Mr Putin – because it would be too dangerous for them to accept money from him.
