George Osborne is expected to delay next month’s Autumn Statement by 24 hours to fit in with the travel plans of David Cameron, who has been given clearance to make an official visit to Beijing.
The prime minister is likely to meet the new Chinese leadership in Beijing in early December, marking the end of a chill in bilateral relations since he met the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader, last year.
Such is the importance attached by Mr Cameron and Mr Osborne to the Sino-UK relationship, that the chancellor is considering postponing his Autumn Statement by 24 hours – to December 5 – to avoid a clash with the prime minister’s trip.
