Greek poll fuels eurozone strains

Greece’s centre-right New Democracy party was in a neck-and-neck struggle yesterday with Syriza, its radical leftist opponents, in an election whose uncertain outcome threatens to scupper Europe’s efforts to hold the eurozone together.

Final exit polls showed New Democracy with 28.6-30 per cent of the vote and Syriza with 27-28.4 per cent, meaning either party could lead the next government but neither would have a parliamentary majority.

The result sets the stage for difficult negotiations to form a coalition government, and leaves uncertain who may become Greece’s next prime minister and head the effort to save the nation from dropping out of the eurozone.
