Assange loses extradition appeal but remains in UK

Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, has lost his appeal to the Supreme Court against extradition to Sweden, where he faces allegations of sexual assault.

Mr Assange was not in court yesterday to hear the decision, which was passed with five of the seven judges in favour, but further legal wrangling is likely to mean he will not be immediately boarding an aircraft.

The ruling in Britain’s highest court marks the culmination of an 18-month legal process that began with Mr Assange’s arrest in December 2010 at the height of WikiLeaks’ notoriety.
