A powerful aftershock sparked renewed anxiety in north-eastern Japan one month after the earthquake and tsunami that devastated coastal communities and caused the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.
Amid growing concern about the long-term health risks posed by radiation leaks from the Fukushima Daiichi atomic power station, the government announced plans to widen evacuation zones around the crippled plant to beyond the previous 30km limit.
The crisis at the plant has compounded the difficulties of helping victims of the tsunami that was unleashed by the March 11 magnitude 9.0 earthquake. Nearly 150,000 people are still living in refugee centres and more than 27,000 are either dead or missing.
