Bashir triumphs in Sudan election

President Omar al-Bashir has scored a resounding victory in Sudan's first multiparty elections in nearly a quarter of a century, in defiance of an international warrant for his arrest on war crimes charges.

Results from the elections, which were marred by partial opposition boycotts, organisational failures and allegations of rigging, gave Mr Bashir 68.2 per cent of the vote.

Yasir Arman, of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, which rules the semi-autonomous south, picked up 21.7 per cent despite pulling out of the elections before the voting in protest at alleged fraud. Separately, Salva Kiir was confirmed with 92.99 per cent as leader of the south.
