A Chinese mayor has called for greater media and public scrutiny of government corruption, in a rare official acknowledgement of a growing scandal in southern Guangdong province.
”I hope there will be more oversight from the media and from all walks of life,” Wang Rong, acting mayor of Shenzhen, said in his first briefing with foreign media since his appointment last month.
Mr Wang was parachuted into the special economic zone bordering Hong Kong after his predecessor, Xu Zongheng, was detained by the Chinese communist party's powerful disciplinary inspection committee for unspecified economic crimes.
