Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is meeting top Algerian officials on Wednesday in a bid to secure alternative gas supplies amid the severe disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East.
Qatar, which supplied 33 per cent of Italy’s LNG imports in 2025, on Tuesday invoked force majeure on its long-term contracts following Iran’s strikes on its main liquefied natural gas complex at Ras Laffan.
At a meeting with Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday, Meloni is expected to press for additional gas supplies from Algeria to help fill the gap.
