North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to uphold the “irreversible” nature of his country’s nuclear programme as he issued a sharp rebuke of US “aggression”, in an implicit criticism of the war in Iran.
Kim, speaking on Monday at the Supreme People’s Assembly, the regime’s rubber-stamp parliament, hailed nuclear weapons as the source of North Korea’s recent progress, beyond maintaining deterrence.
“The firm establishment of the nuclear shield firmly guarantees and drives the development of all sectors of the country, including the economy and culture, as well as the improvement of the people’s lives, not only in the military and security fields,” he said in comments released on Tuesday by state media.
