Rob Minnick remembers the exact date when he placed his last sports bet.
It was an autumn Saturday, more than three years ago, when he was augmenting his heavy online wagers with action in a brick-and-mortar casino. Within hours, he amassed a debt that would take six months to pay off. He withdrew cash advances that maxed out three credit cards.
At one point some of that cash fell out of his pocket. He panicked. Then he laughed and thought to himself: “You’re going to gamble every dollar you have anyway,” he says. “Leave it on the floor because maybe someone else will find it. Maybe they’ll pick it up and give it to their kids.”
