Why AI start-up Hugging Face turned down a $500mn Nvidia deal

Amid investor frenzy over AI, the ‘anti Silicon Valley’ group chose independence and desire to promote open models

AI start-up Hugging Face received a $500mn investment offer from chipmaker Nvidia late last year, according to people familiar with the proposal.

The deal would have valued the group at $7bn and was more than it has raised since founding a decade ago. Hugging Face turned down the offer.

While declining to comment on the deal, the company said it does not want a single dominant investor that could sway decisions. Nvidia declined to comment.
