Argentina is dabbling with spoiler status at major multilateral negotiations, as President Javier Milei signals close ideological alignment with Donald Trump’s administration.
At the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, which concluded on the weekend and was boycotted by the US administration, Argentina repeatedly voiced dissent during talks and reversed a recently announced plan to deliver a new emissions target to fulfil its obligations under the Paris agreement.
Milei also skipped the G20’s weekend summit in Johannesburg and his government criticised the leaders’ joint declaration after Trump snubbed the meeting and told South Africa not to issue a statement in the US’s absence.
