The BBC has apologised to Donald Trump over the misleading edit of a speech made by him in 2021, but the UK public service broadcaster has rejected the US president’s demand for compensation.
On Thursday evening, BBC lawyers wrote to Trump’s legal team in response to his threat to sue the corporation for more than $1bn over a Panorama documentary that contained the misleading edit of his 2021 speech.
The BBC said it had no plans to rebroadcast the documentary, first broadcast in October 2024, but added that “while the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim”.
