Israeli premier wagers Trump can help rewrite narrative around worst security failure in nation’s history

“Give him a pardon,” declared Donald Trump, pointing to Benjamin Netanyahu at the close of a triumphant speech to Israel’s parliament.

The US president was referring to the Israeli premier’s long-running corruption trial. But on a day Israel when celebrated 20 hostage releases, a moment of elation on Hoshana Rabbah — the final day of “divine judgment” in the Sukkot holiday — the call for clemency had far broader resonance.

Israel took its biggest step on Monday towards emerging from the trauma that followed the October 7 2023 attack, after the final living hostages were released from Gaza.
