How Lotus’s drive to become a ‘British Porsche’ went wrong

Chinese owner’s ambitious plans for sports-car maker hampered by chaotic decisions, departures and job cuts

The recent job cuts at Lotus have deepened turmoil at the British sports-car maker following an abrupt U-turn over plans to end manufacturing in the UK, raising questions about the longer-term commitment of its Chinese owner Geely.

In June Lotus cancelled plans to shut its historic Hethel plant in Norfolk less than 24 hours after the Financial Times reported it was considering a closure as soon as next year.

Despite immediate promises of support from the UK government, internal turmoil continued in the following weeks as Matt Windle, the European boss of Lotus, was replaced by a Chinese executive after just four months in the role.
