Can finance put a stop to AI data mining?

Access fees that the sector say will protect customers could also act as a competitive barrier

As generative artificial intelligence changes the way people use technology, new battle lines are being drawn around the control of customer data.

This isn’t just an issue for tech businesses: any company that holds critical customer data controls a key input in the new AI economy. To some, charging for or outright blocking access to that information is starting to seem like a handy defensive strategy.

Last week, Bloomberg revealed that JPMorgan had proposed imposing fees on fintech companies for accessing its customers’ bank accounts. The most obvious target of such charges are the payments apps that have eaten into a profitable line of business for banks.
