British retail sales tumble 2.7 per cent in May

Steeper than expected drop comes amid signs that economic growth is slowing

British retail sales suffered their steepest drop in 18 months in May as consumers cut back on purchases of food and household goods.

May’s drop was led by a 5 per cent fall in sales at food stores and a 2.5 per cent decline in household goods as shoppers pulled back.
