Israel’s opposition fails to capitalise on Benjamin Netanyahu poll slump

Even a premier renowned for his survival ability has surprised many by retaining power amid dismal ratings

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid took to the Knesset floor last month to launch a broadside against Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Nothing will remain of you,” the head of the centrist Yesh Atid party told the watching prime minister. “There won’t be a museum with your name, nor a square, nor the Benjamin Netanyahu fountain. There will be only one thing: October 7.”

Much of the Israeli public agrees with him, with polls showing that 70 per cent want the long-serving PM to quit immediately or when the war in Gaza is concluded.
